Spanish credit has performed tremendously of late

We did look at Spanish flatteners to try and find segments where the curve hadn't flattened enough to reflect that credit movement

To do this in value terms – I look at Carry and Roll (3mo) divided by vol (3mo). This kind of gives me a crude, expected return adjusted for the riskiness of a given issuer/name

Here's how that looks on a graph – with the Spanish Low coupon bond maturities labelled – so here I can see that -spgb jul24 / +spgb Jan28 on a regressed basis offers decent positive roll and carry that is additionally out of line with the rest of the Spanish curve

So in pure value terms I think this is one of the last places one can find value to extend in Spain – In vol terms the changes in jan 28s are 60% bigger than jul24 – that makes sense the shorter bond is more anchored towards rolling down the curve

That said the jan28 is cheap

So here's how that trade looks on a 160% hedge ratio (i.e. extra 60% short)

NB – another intersting note is that only now do we see Italy and spain as equal in vol adjusted roll and carry pretty much through the curve – I cannot be long Spain here and if anything am looking to fade its recent rally. That said I think the 24s 28s spread is one of the few places I can get on what I think is a Spain bullish trade with value

Also in Germany am starting to see 10s30s as very flat vs the rest of the curve
